Onion Address
Trade-offs of .onion-Only Email
The advantage: your email never crosses from the Tor network to the regular internet. No exit point where traffic can be monitored. The trade-off: you can only communicate with other .onion email addresses. Gmail, ProtonMail (clearnet), or any standard email address cannot receive messages from OnionMail.
This makes OnionMail ideal for specific use cases — secure communication between a journalist and a source where both have .onion addresses, or coordination within a group that has all agreed to use .onion email. For general anonymous email that can reach anyone, Mail2Tor or ProtonMail via .onion are more practical.
| Service | Network Privacy | Clearnet Reach |
|---|---|---|
| OnionMail | ✅ Maximum — never leaves Tor | ❌ .onion addresses only |
| Mail2Tor | ✅ High — clearnet delivery via Tor relay | ✅ Can reach any email address |
| ProtonMail .onion | ✅ Good — IP hidden from Proton | ✅ Global delivery |
